Love letters to the dead
a novel by ava dellaira
Love letters dead ava dellaira
It begins as an assignment for English class:
write a letter to a dead person.
Laurel choosed Kurt Cobain because her sister, May, loved him. And he died young, just like May. Soon, Laurel has a notebook full of letters to the dead—to people like Janis Joplin, Heath Ledger, Amelia Earheart, and Amy Winehouse—though she never gives a single one of them to her teacher. She writes about starting high school, navigating the choppy waters new friendships, learning to live with her splintering family, falling in love for the first time, and, most important, trying to grieve for May. But how do you mourn for someone you haven’t forgiven?
It’s not until Lauren has written the truth about what happened to herself that she can finally accept what happened to May. And only when Laurel has begun to see her sister as the person she was—lovely and amazing and deeply flawed—can she tryly start to discover her own path.
“Dear Ava, I loved your book.xxx”—Emma Watson
“A brilliant story about the courage it takes to keep living
after your world falls apart. A heart-wrenching celebration of love and friendship and family.”—Laurie Halse Anderson, author of Speak’’

Ava Dellaira
Ava went to college at the University of Chicago, and then received a MFA from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, where she lived on the bottom floor of a farm house once occupied by Kurt Vonnegut (how cool is that?!) and studied poetry.
After graduating from Iowa, she moved to Los Angeles with aspirations of becoming a screenwriter, and had the good fortune to get a job working for Stephen Chbosky. When I gave him some of my writing, he said, “I think you should write a novel.” That night, on her drive home, the title popped into her head:. Love Letters to the Dead. She started writing the book that night.
Ava lives in Santa Monica, in an apartment the size of a shoebox. She loves spending time with her boyfriend and family.
Debut author Dellaira’s heart-wrenching novel begins with Laurel’s freshman assignment to write a letter to a dead person. She starts with Kurt Cobain, who had been a favorite of her recently deceased older sister, May. Gradually, through the teen’s letters to other dead celebrities (Janis Joplin, Amelia Earhart, River Phoenix, and more), readers will begin to piece together the history of her splintered family life.
Laurel is devastatingly, emotionally fragile, but she makes friends at her new high school and even starts to develop a serious love interest. Her misconstrued hero-worship of May gradually evolves into a deeper understanding of her beloved sister’s strengths and many imperfections.
Beautifully written, this powerful novel illustrates the concept that writing is an especially valuable form of healing for those dealing with overwhelming pain and grief. Best for teens who enjoyed Stephen Chbosky’s The Perks of Being a Wallflower (MTV, 1999).—Susan Riley, Mamaroneck Public Library, NY

Chopsticks out! This month we’re getting our noodles in a twist over which is best at broth: Japan with its hearty ramen or Vietnam and it’s tasty pho
ramen Japanese wheat noodle broth Ramen has come of age since the heavy days of Wagamama, thanks to Bone Daddies et al. The free jazz of the culinary world, you can add pretty much whatever you want to the noodle and broth base (no, not candyfloss, don’t be ridiculous) - beef, pork, chicken, shitake, kelp, skipjack tuna flakes, a cheesy soft-boiled egg...The possibilities are virtually endless. Don’t be shy with the soy sauce.
Pho Vietnamese rice noodle broth If ramen is a coquetish, unpredictable bundle of fun, pho is its reliable big brother. The list of pho ingredients are a bit more restricitive - usually beef or chicken, with beansprouts and herbs - but you always know where you stand, and that’s face down, inhaling delicious, piping hot noodle soup.
Koi Ramen Bar; Brixton Market. Koi translates of ‘in love’ (the owners are that dedicated to ramen). But they’re taking it slow, with a 12-hour simmered tonkotsu. koiramenbar.uk
Pimp My Ramen; Greenwich Market. Is making noodle soup into a burger a step too far? The pulled pork ramen burger here may help you decide. greenwichmarket.com
Banhmi11; Broadway Market. The beef pho at this Hackney mainstay is slow-simmered, with lashings of coriander. banhmi11.com
Mo Pho; 10 Coulgate Street, Bribon. The best pho this side of Hanoi, but it’s worth trekking to Brockley for the name alone. mopho-vietcafe.com

Racking ‘Em Up London rib king the Rib Man once got through a ton of ribs in a single day - that’s 2,000 racks, which meant he stripped the meat from around 20,000.
